What is Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is about your indoor environment. The air we breathe inside and outside has many pollutants, dust, airborne microbes, pollutions, chemicals and more.

The indoor environment has a lot of pollutants we do not even realize we are breathing. Furniture, paints, household cleaning products, dog hair, dirt we track in from our shoes, air leaks in the house and probably the most overlooked it loose ducts in our duct system. When your ducts aren’t properly sealed they pull in pollutants from the attic or below your house if the ducts are installed under the house.

Why Does it Matter?

Allergies, Asthma and other breathing related problems cost us personally money out of our pockets to treat symptoms that can be easily fixed. These same issues cause people to lose sleep and productivity.

If you had to the choice of breathing cleaner air than what you are already breathing wouldn’t you?

Pet dander, dust pollutants, vapors from household cleaners, furniture, paint and many other items are the cause of irritants that increase the effects of seasonal allergies, asthma and other breathing problems.

Poor Air Quality Gallery

We have come across some very unhealthy, dirty duct-work throughout the years.   Below is a collection of images demonstrating issues that are unfortunately quite common in old, aging systems.

Whole-House UV Air Purifier

Because it works inside your central air system a whole-house UV air purifier is able to intercept airborne pathogens and destroy them as they pass by. As air cycles through the system it passes by the UV light many times exposing and re-exposing airborne microbes to it’s sterilizing effect. this has proven to be a safe, economical, chemical free way to significantly reduce airborne contaminants indoors.

In scientific studies UV light has been proven to kill 90% of microbial contaminants after 10 minutes of exposure and 99% after 1 hour.

For over a century scientists have known that certain frequencies of light have a  devastating effect on microbial life. We now know that exposure to ultraviolet light in the range of 254 NM (UV-C band) disrupts the DNA of micro-organisms thus preventing them from reproducing, thereby effectively killing them.

Allergies, Asthma and other breathing related problems cost us personally money out of our pockets to treat symptoms that can be easily fixed. These same issues cause people to lose sleep and productivity.

Pet dander, dust pollutants, vapors from household cleaners, furniture, paint and many other items are the cause of irritants that increase the effects of seasonal allergies, asthma and other breathing problems.

Installation of a germicidal UV light inside the air system inhibits the growth of mold which saves energy by allowing the system to operate more efficiently. A cleaner system also requires less maintenance.

Most people don’t realize that indoor air is often far more polluted than outdoor air. Contaminants can include viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew, and allergens. Some are only annoying, others can make you sick. Because air passes repeatedly through your HVAC system (in fact many microbes like the cool dark damp interior of the system) this is the ideal place for germs to multiply and spread throughout the house.

Why Should You Seal Your Ducts?

The importance of Duct Sealing is undervalued within an Air Conditioning system design and most AC companies.

Ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. But in typical houses, about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. The result is higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable, no matter how the thermostat is set.  Truficient Energy Solutions will seal air leaks using mastic sealant or metal tape and insulating all the ducts  Also, we make sure that the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls, and ceiling.

Sealing leaks  can improve the overall comfort of your home and help to fix many of these common problems:

  • Beter Humidity Control

  • Improve Comfort

  • Reduces mechanical failure of your new AC system

  • Reduce outside noise

  • Save Money

  • Reduce pollen, dust, insects from entering the home
