What the Sapphire Is and Why It Stands Out

The Gree Sapphire is the highest-efficiency single-zone mini split in Gree's residential lineup — and one of the highest-efficiency single-zone units available from any manufacturer in the U.S. residential market. The headline spec is 30 SEER2 cooling efficiency, which earns ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification — a designation reserved for the top performers in each product category.

For a Dallas homeowner running a mini split through the six-month cooling season under significant solar exposure, that efficiency rating translates directly to lower monthly electricity consumption versus standard 18-22 SEER2 equipment. On a 12,000 BTU unit running 6 to 8 hours per day during peak Dallas summer, the SEER2 differential between the Sapphire and a baseline-efficiency single-zone is meaningful — typically a 25 to 30 percent reduction in cooling-season electricity consumption versus standard ductless equipment.

For a Dallas single-zone application, the Sapphire is the right specification when:

    • Maximum efficiency is the primary purchasing criterion
    • The buyer plans to run the system year-round in a heavily-used room
    • Long-term operating cost over a 12-15 year equipment life is the calculation that matters
    • ENERGY STAR Most Efficient eligibility is needed for utility programs or builder-program purposes

    Sapphire Specifications

The Sapphire single-zone line covers the most common residential capacities:

    • Capacity range: 9,000 / 12,000 / 18,000 / 24,000 BTU
    • Cooling efficiency: Up to 30.5 SEER2 on the 9,000 BTU unit; up to 25.0 SEER2 on the 24,000 BTU
    • Heating efficiency: Up to 14.0 HSPF2
    • Heating capacity: 100 percent at 5°F outdoor ambient, continued operation to -22°F
    • Refrigerant: R-32 single-component refrigerant, GWP 675
    • Indoor unit sound: As low as 21 dB(A) on whisper mode
    • ENERGY STAR Most Efficient — top tier of the ENERGY STAR program
    • Smart control: Wi-Fi capable via Gree+ app
    • Warranty: 10-year compressor, 7-year parts (extended to 12 years parts in some configurations when registered)

For typical Dallas single-zone applications — a 250 to 450 square foot bedroom, office, or back addition — the 9,000 to 12,000 BTU sizes deliver the highest SEER2 numbers. Capacity scales up to 24,000 BTU for converted garages, large great-rooms, or detached structures.

    Why R-32 Refrigerant Matters

The Sapphire uses R-32 refrigerant. Under EPA AIM Act regulations effective January 1, 2025, new residential mini split equipment can no longer be manufactured with R-410A. Gree transitioned its full residential lineup to R-32 ahead of the regulatory deadline.

R-32 has a global warming potential of 675 — roughly 68 percent lower than R-410A's 2,088 GWP. R-32 is also a single-component refrigerant rather than a blend, which means it doesn't fractionate during a small leak event and services cleanly. For a Dallas buyer, current Sapphire installations use refrigerant the industry is moving toward.

R-32 is classified A2L — mildly flammable — requiring A2L-certified installation. Truficient technicians are A2L-certified for R-32 systems.

What 30 SEER2 Actually Means in Dallas Operating Cost

SEER2 is the seasonal efficiency rating standardized by the Department of Energy in 2023 to better reflect real-world operating conditions. Higher SEER2 means more cooling per unit of electricity. The math for a typical Dallas single-zone application:

A 12,000 BTU mini split running approximately 1,500 hours per year in a heavily-used Dallas bedroom or home office consumes roughly:

    • 30 SEER2 (Sapphire): ~600 kWh per year
    • 22 SEER2 (typical premium tier): ~820 kWh per year
    • 16 SEER2 (baseline): ~1,125 kWh per year

At Texas residential electricity rates of approximately $0.13 per kWh (current as of 2026), the annual difference between a 30 SEER2 Sapphire and a baseline 16 SEER2 unit is roughly $68 per year in operating cost. Over a 15-year equipment life, that's approximately $1,000 in cumulative electricity savings — meaningful for buyers where total cost of ownership is the deciding factor.

Where the Sapphire Fits Best in Dallas Applications

Heavily-used primary bedrooms. Master bedrooms running year-round with night setpoints and daytime occupancy benefit most from maximum efficiency. The Sapphire's 30 SEER2 in the 9,000-12,000 BTU range covers this application directly.

Home offices used 8+ hours per day. Long-occupancy spaces compound the operating-cost advantage of high-efficiency equipment. For dedicated home office buildouts, the Sapphire makes the math work.

Builder and utility programs. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification qualifies the Sapphire for various utility incentive programs and builder-program ratings. For new construction or major renovation projects where program eligibility matters, the certification is a hard requirement.

Detached studio spaces and ADUs. Year-round occupancy in a small footprint where heating and cooling load runs continuously — the efficiency rating compounds the value of equipment selection.

Sapphire vs. Vireo R-32 vs. Livo

Gree's residential single-zone lineup spans three primary tiers:

    • Sapphire — highest efficiency (up to 30.5 SEER2), ENERGY STAR Most Efficient, premium price tier
    • Vireo R-32 — mid-tier efficiency (up to 23 SEER2), strong performance at lower price point. See Vireo R-32 →
    • Livo GEN4 — affordable tier, solid performance at value pricing. See Livo →

For Dallas buyers where maximum efficiency drives the decision, the Sapphire is the answer. For buyers balancing efficiency against budget, the Vireo R-32 is the volume tier. The Livo is the right choice when budget is the primary constraint and the application doesn't require top-tier efficiency.

    Sapphire vs. Mitsubishi MSZ-FS

The two highest-efficiency single-zone mini splits in the residential market are the Gree Sapphire (30.5 SEER2) and the Mitsubishi MSZ-FS Hyper-Heat (up to 30 SEER2 on smaller capacities). Both achieve ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification. Real differences:

    • SEER2: Effectively comparable at the top tier — both reach 30 SEER2 on 9,000 BTU.
    • Cold-climate heating: Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat continues operation to -13°F; Sapphire continues to -22°F.
    • Warranty: Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer offers 12-year compressor with parts; Gree offers 10-year compressor / 7-year parts.
    • Price tier: Sapphire is typically positioned at a lower price point than equivalent Mitsubishi capacity.
    • Refrigerant: Both use R-32.

For value-tier buyers wanting top-spec efficiency without paying the Mitsubishi premium, the Sapphire is the clear value play. Full comparison →

    What the Installation Looks Like

Assessment. We size the Sapphire for actual room load using Manual J calculations. Right-sized equipment delivers the 30 SEER2 performance in real-world operation; oversized equipment short-cycles and never reaches the rated efficiency.

Outdoor unit placement. The Sapphire outdoor unit is roughly the size of a small carry-on suitcase for the 9,000-18,000 BTU sizes. We plan placement for setback clearance, neighbor consideration, and short line-set runs.

Indoor unit mounting. Wall-mounted at roughly seven feet of height. The Sapphire indoor unit has a clean white finish that integrates well in modern interiors.

Wi-Fi commissioning. During walkthrough, we connect the indoor unit to home Wi-Fi and pair it with the Gree+ app for remote control and scheduling.

Installation day. A typical single-zone Sapphire installation is four to eight hours.
