What Multi F MAX LGRED° Is and Why 8 Zones Matters
The LG Multi F MAX LGRED° is LG's flagship residential multi-zone platform — one outdoor condenser serving up to 8 indoor units, each with independent setpoint, fan speed, and schedule control. The "MAX" designation refers to the zone count: this is the residential multi-zone option for Dallas homes that genuinely need more than 4-5 zones, where competing brands cap out at lower zone counts.
For Dallas applications, Multi F MAX is the right specification when:
- The home needs 5 to 8 distinct zones — typical of larger custom homes (3,500+ sq ft), homes with multiple finished levels (basement + main + upper + bonus room), or homes with detached structures (main house + garage office + ADU)
- The homeowner is committed to LG ecosystem (ThinQ smart-home, LG appliances)
- Whole-home heating and cooling from one all-electric system is the goal
- Outdoor footprint of one larger condenser is preferred over multiple smaller ones
For 1-4 zone applications, the smaller LG Multi F (non-MAX) or single-zone LGRED° is the better fit at lower per-unit cost.
Multi F MAX Specifications
The Multi F MAX LGRED° outdoor unit family covers larger residential applications:
- Outdoor unit capacities: 36,000 / 48,000 / 60,000 BTU
- Zones per outdoor unit: Up to 8 indoor units (in capacity-mix configurations)
- Cooling efficiency: Up to 22.5 SEER2 in typical multi-zone configurations
- Heating efficiency: Up to 11.5 HSPF2
- Cold-climate heating: 100% rated heating capacity at 0°F, continued operation to -13°F
- Refrigerant: R-32 single-component refrigerant, GWP 675
- Indoor unit options: Wall-mount, ceiling cassette, floor-mount, slim-duct concealed, ArtCool Gallery (for premium aesthetic applications)
- Indoor unit capacities: 7,000 / 9,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 18,000 / 24,000 BTU
- Smart control: LG ThinQ Wi-Fi built into every indoor unit — no add-on adapter required
- Voice integration: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant
- Warranty: 10-year limited compressor warranty
Indoor Unit Mix Flexibility
The 8-zone capability is what differentiates Multi F MAX from competing platforms. A 60,000 BTU Multi F MAX outdoor unit can serve a configuration like:
- 24,000 BTU ceiling cassette (great room) + 12,000 BTU wall-mount (master bedroom) + 9,000 BTU wall-mount × 3 (secondary bedrooms) + 9,000 BTU wall-mount (home office) + 7,000 BTU wall-mount (powder/laundry zone) = 8 zones
Or:
- 18,000 BTU slim-duct (upstairs bedroom wing, with short concealed ductwork) + 18,000 BTU ceiling cassette (open kitchen/dining) + 12,000 BTU wall-mount (master) + 9,000 BTU wall-mount × 3 (additional bedrooms) + 9,000 BTU wall-mount (basement) = 7 zones
For homes that legitimately need 6, 7, or 8 zones — and a meaningful share of larger Dallas custom homes do — Multi F MAX is the residential option that fits.
ThinQ Smart Control Across All Zones
LG's standout differentiator versus competing multi-zone brands is built-in ThinQ Wi-Fi capability on every indoor unit. There's no add-on module or accessory needed. Functionality across all 8 zones:
- Per-zone remote control — each indoor unit appears as its own controllable device in ThinQ
- Per-zone scheduling — different schedules for bedrooms, living areas, basement, ADU
- Geofencing — automatically adjust setpoints when household members leave or arrive
- Voice control — Alexa or Google Assistant for any zone
- Energy monitoring — track consumption per zone and per system
- Whole-home dashboard — view all 8 zones from a single ThinQ screen
- System diagnostics — push notifications per zone for fault conditions
For Dallas buyers building out a smart home — Samsung TVs, LG appliances, smart locks, smart lighting, ThinQ-managed HVAC across 8 zones — the integration is comprehensive. More on LG ThinQ for Dallas →
Why R-32 Refrigerant Matters
Multi F MAX LGRED° uses R-32 refrigerant. Under EPA AIM Act regulations effective January 1, 2025, new residential mini split equipment can no longer be manufactured with R-410A. LG transitioned the full residential lineup to R-32 ahead of the regulatory deadline.
R-32 has a global warming potential of 675 — roughly 68 percent lower than R-410A's 2,088 GWP. R-32 is also a single-component refrigerant rather than a blend, services cleanly, and is the refrigerant the residential industry is moving toward.
R-32 is classified A2L — mildly flammable — requiring A2L-certified installation. Truficient technicians are A2L-certified for R-32 systems.
Where Multi F MAX Fits Best in Dallas Applications
Larger custom homes (3,500-6,500 sq ft). Custom homes in Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow, Far North Dallas, and Lakewood frequently have layouts that benefit from 6-8 zones — finished basement + main living + upstairs bedrooms + bonus rooms + home office + outdoor conditioned spaces.
Two-story or three-story homes with stacked zones. Multi F MAX cleanly handles a basement + first floor + second floor + bonus zone configuration that would require multiple outdoor units on competing platforms.
Homes with detached structures. Main house + detached garage office + ADU + pool house can all run from a single Multi F MAX outdoor unit with proper line-set planning. Single condenser, single dashboard.
Multifamily and duplex/triplex applications. Per-unit Multi F MAX systems for stacked-flat configurations, with each unit's zones controlled independently by its own occupants.
Smart-home heavy installations. When the homeowner is committed to building out a connected home and wants per-zone scheduling/automation — Multi F MAX with ThinQ across 8 zones is the platform that fits without bridge devices or third-party hubs.
Multi F MAX vs. Multi F (Non-MAX)
LG's Multi F (non-MAX) platform is the lower-zone-count residential multi-zone — typically 2 to 5 zones from a smaller outdoor unit. For homes that don't need more than 5 zones, Multi F is more cost-effective and physically smaller. Multi F MAX is the right step up specifically when the home needs 6, 7, or 8 zones.
Multi F MAX vs. Mitsubishi MXZ Hyper-Heat
Both LG Multi F MAX and Mitsubishi MXZ Hyper-Heat are flagship residential multi-zone platforms supporting up to 8 zones. Real differences:
- Cold-climate spec: Multi F MAX rates 100% heating capacity at 0°F; Mitsubishi MXZ Hyper-Heat rates full capacity at 5°F. For Dallas applications, both are overspec for the climate.
- Smart control: LG ships ThinQ Wi-Fi built into every indoor unit; Mitsubishi requires the kumo cloud accessory module on each indoor unit.
- Indoor unit options: Comparable wall, ceiling cassette, floor, slim-duct, and concealed-duct catalogs. LG offers ArtCool Gallery for premium aesthetic applications.
- Warranty: Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer offers 12-year compressor with parts; LG offers 10-year compressor.
- Refrigerant: Both use R-32.
For Dallas homeowners building out smart-home integrations or already running ThinQ for appliances, Multi F MAX is the natural fit. For warranty-driven decisions, Mitsubishi has the stronger warranty on Diamond Dealer installations. Full comparison →
What the Installation Looks Like
Assessment. We size the Multi F MAX outdoor unit to the calculated total Manual J load and design the indoor-unit configuration around the home's actual zoning needs. With 8-zone capability, the design conversation gets longer — we work through which rooms need dedicated control, which can share, and where the line-set routing is feasible.
Outdoor unit placement. Multi F MAX 60,000 BTU outdoor units are roughly the size of a small refrigerator. Placement planning accounts for setback, neighbor consideration, line-set length to each indoor unit, and refrigerant pipe routing through the home.
Indoor unit mounting. Wall, ceiling cassette, floor, slim-duct, or ArtCool Gallery — depending on each room. Each indoor unit needs a small wall or ceiling penetration for the line set, condensate drain, and control wiring.
ThinQ commissioning. During walkthrough, we connect each indoor unit to home Wi-Fi and pair them with the customer's ThinQ account for per-zone control. Schedules and automations get configured at commissioning.
Installation day. A 5-zone Multi F MAX installation is typically two to three days. A 7-8 zone installation can extend to four days depending on home complexity and line-set routing.
