When a Mini-Split Is the Right Answer in Garland

Garland is predominantly 1960s-1980s suburban housing in the 75040-75044 ZIP corridor. Most homes have original ductwork from construction and are running second- or third-generation HVAC equipment. Most Garland homes that opt for mini-split installations don't need to replace the entire central system — instead, a mini-split addresses specific applications the central system can't handle:

Sun-exposed master bedrooms. Many Garland homes have west-facing master bedrooms that run 4-6 degrees warmer than the living areas on summer afternoons. Single-zone Mitsubishi MSZ-FS units installed independently of the central system bring the master to setpoint without overcooling the rest of the home.

Bonus rooms above the garage. A universal Garland problem: finished bonus rooms over the garage that the original ductwork couldn't reach properly. Single-zone mini-splits at 9,000-12,000 BTU resolve the chronic temperature complaint.

Converted garage offices and back additions. Detached or attached garage office buildouts, sunroom conversions, and back additions are common Garland candidates for single-zone supplemental mini-splits.

Multi-zone whole-home conversions. For Garland homes where the existing ductwork is degraded or where chronic floor-to-floor temperature differential drives the comfort complaint, a multi-zone Mitsubishi MXZ retrofit replaces the central system entirely with 4-6 zones of independent control.

    Common Garland Mini-Split Configurations

Single-zone supplemental. A single-zone Mitsubishi MSZ-FS or equivalent addresses one specific room. The existing central system continues operating; the mini-split handles what it can't reach. Capacity 9,000-24,000 BTU depending on the room.

Multi-zone whole-home. A Mitsubishi MXZ multi-zone outdoor unit serves four to six indoor zones, replacing the central system entirely. A typical configuration in a 2,000 square foot Garland ranch:

    • One zone for living room, dining, and kitchen
    • One zone for primary bedroom
    • One zone for secondary bedrooms (single unit serving the bedroom hallway)
    • One optional zone for converted garage office or bonus room

Two-system configuration. For larger Garland homes (2,500+ sq ft) with chronic upstairs/downstairs comfort issues, splitting the central system into two independent systems provides better zone control than single-system configurations.

    R-32 Refrigerant in Garland Mini-Splits

Every Mitsubishi mini-split installed today uses R-32 refrigerant. Under EPA AIM Act regulations effective January 1, 2025, new residential mini-split equipment can no longer be manufactured with R-410A. R-32 has a global warming potential of 675 — roughly 68 percent lower than R-410A's 2,088 — and services cleanly as a single-component refrigerant.

R-32 is classified A2L — mildly flammable — requiring A2L-certified installation. Truficient technicians are A2L-certified for R-32 systems.

    The Humidity Connection

Garland homes show the classic humidity symptoms of aging single-stage equipment — sticky air, mildew in closets, indoor RH running 60-65% despite the AC operating. Compounded by Dallas's rising outdoor humidity over the past two decades. Inverter mini-splits running continuously at part-load through the cooling season address this directly. (See our DFW Humidity Hub for the comprehensive humidity picture.)

    Equipment Options

    Mitsubishi MSZ-FS wall-mount — slim profile, 19 dB(A) whisper mode, white finish.

Mitsubishi MXZ multi-zone outdoor unit — three- to eight-zone configurations.

Mitsubishi SLZ ceiling cassette — recessed flush-mount for renovated rooms.

Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat (H2i) — handles rare North Texas February cold snaps without backup heat strips.
