These ductless wonders first appeared in Japan in the 1950s, with Mitsubishi leading the charge in 1959. Toshiba also played a significant role in their development.

Why Japan? Several factors contributed to the rise of mini-splits in Japan:

  • Limited Space: Japanese homes were often smaller with thinner walls, making traditional ductwork impractical.
  • Resource Scarcity: As an island nation, Japan has limited natural resources, driving the need for energy-efficient solutions.
  • Harsh Climate: Japan experiences a wide range of temperatures, including very cold winters, necessitating effective heating solutions.

These factors spurred the development of compact, efficient heating and cooling systems – the mini-splits we know today. Key milestones in mini-split history include:

  • 1959: Mitsubishi creates the first ductless mini-split.
  • 1965: The first ductless mini-split system arrived in the United States, marketed by Sears.
  • 1973: Daikin Industries develops multi-zone mini-split HVAC systems.
  • 1982: Daikin introduces variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.

While mini-splits initially gained popularity in Japan and Europe, their adoption in the United States took longer. However, their energy efficiency, zoning capabilities, and ease of installation have made them increasingly popular, especially for families looking for customized comfort solutions.

How Heat Pump Mini-Splits Work (and Why They Ice Up)

Think of heat pump mini-splits as reverse air conditioners. They are essentially heat transfer systems, moving heat from one place to another. In the summer, they remove heat from inside your home and transfer it outside. In the winter, they reverse this process, extracting heat from the outside air (even in very cold temperatures) and bringing it indoors.

This process is similar to how traditional HVAC systems work, but with a key difference. In the summer, the indoor coil gets cold to provide cool air, absorbing heat and transferring it outside. In the winter, this process reverses: the indoor coil gets hot, and the outdoor coil gets cold.

For the outdoor coil to effectively absorb heat from the outside air, its temperature must be lower than the outside air temperature. So, if it’s 32°F outside, the outdoor coil might be running at around 22°F or even lower. As you can imagine, this cold temperature causes condensation, which quickly freezes, leading to ice buildup on the coil.

This is where the defrost cycle comes in. To remove this ice, the mini-split temporarily reverses its operation. The system typically shuts down the outdoor fan and uses heat to melt the ice. You might hear a loud sound during this process – that’s the reversing valve changing the refrigerant flow.

Sometimes, during the defrost cycle, you might see what appears to be smoke coming from the outdoor unit. Don’t panic! This is actually steam caused by the rapid melting of the ice on the coil. We often receive calls from concerned homeowners thinking their heat pump is on fire, but it’s simply the system doing its job.

Advanced heat pump mini-split systems, particularly those designed to operate in extremely cold temperatures (down to -22°F), have sophisticated control circuits that optimize heat generation even in sub-zero conditions. These systems have come a long way in providing reliable heating in challenging climates.
