Mini splits have the unique capability of providing comfort, energy savings and flexibility. With VRF technology we can now deliver precise heating and cooling to areas by eliminating long duct runs. VRF systems range from simple 1 to 1 heat pump systems all the way up to 200 Air handlers on 1 outdoor heat pump.

A lot of cost savings come into play when you eliminate the need for most of the ducting. There’s also cost savings on roof structure reinforcements due to the size and weight of the equipment. There are space savings by eliminating the service space for large duct runs to be cut in the roof and hung above recessed ceilings. The operational efficiency of VRF systems compared to regular commercial systems probably has the greatest impact.

Installation costs can be saved on total heating and cooling capacity of equipment by reducing the overall capacity of the system. This usually eliminates the extra costs to run the excess capacity to achieve the same cooling and heating capacities. Because these systems are heat pumps that can operate at 80% of total capacity in negative temperatures, we eliminate the need for heat strips which draw a large amount of electricity.

We’ve seen savings over 50% and sometimes as much 65% depending on the time of year for energy costs because of the efficiency of these systems. If a system is designed correctly, it can operate the system to avoid peak load times as well operate based on load shifting throughout the day.

For off peak demand savings: there’s large potential to cut the demand charge by a large percentage.

For load shifting: On clear sunny days at different times of the day the heat gain on your home shifts because of the angle of the sun. This can eliminate unnecessary heating and cooling of one side of the building and also make it possible to reduce the total tonnage of a system by reducing costs even more.
